The Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms led by Professor Attahiru Jega has presented their inception report to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Addressing State House Correspondents after the presentation and meeting with President Tinubu, Jega disclosed that some of the recommendations have the capacity to tackle the perennial herders-farmers clashes in the country.
He said, “We believe that at the bottom of the herders, farmers clash, is the crisis of adjudication and justice. Because both parties believed they cannot get justice, they result to self help and arming themselves for protection.
“We have to provide water, feeds for the traditional herders, services like schools and others. But the immediate plans is engagement on community bases on the basis of justice.
“We have put forward recommendations that we believe we solve the problems. People should also know that it is not easy to be moving hundreds of cattle from one place to another. They is need to begin to employ technology to allow the herders get more from their venture.”
He said, the committee has also provided detailed guidance on the proposed Livestock Development Ministry, adding that “Our recommendations is quite comprehensive and if we meticulously implement it, we will begin to see growth. I am very pleased to say that President Tinubu has given us the support to drive the process especially through the Proposed Ministry of Livestock Development.”
