Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday commenced the legislative process to repeal Emirate Council Law 2019.
The move to repeal the law has led to apprehension about whether the amendment will lead to revocation of the four additional emirates established by Ganduje’s administration or not.
There are insinuations that there is a possibility that the amendment may lead to the return of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Muhammadu Sanusi II as emir of Kano.
The repeal of the emirate law followed a motion raised by the majority leader of the assembly, Lawan Hussaini Yan Gurasa, during the plenary session of the assembly.
Yan Gurasa, representing the Dala state constituency, moved the motion under a matter of urgent public importance interest, seeking the approval of the lawmakers for urgent amendment.
Upon raising the motion before the presiding officer, Rt. Hon. Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore, a member representing the Dawakin-Kudu state constituency, Shu’aibu Rabiu seconded the motion.
The assembly unanimously adopted the motion for the amendment of the emirate council law and reserved it for next legislative process.
Although the majority leader was silent over the rationale behind the motion, he said the Assembly had received a series of petitions from various interest groups calling for the amendment of the law that led to the division of traditional rulers in the state.
The Emirate Council Law which was amended by former Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2019 introduced the establishment of five new emirs in the state.
The decision of Ganduje led to the division of the Kano Emirate into five Rano, Karaye, Gaya, Bichi and Kano emirate with subsequent inauguration of first class emirs.
The dramatic action of the then Governor led to the dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and subsequent appointment of Aminu Ado Bayero as 15th emir.
