The South-East Labour Party House of Assembly Caucus has declared that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from prolonged incarceration will no doubt separate genuine agitators from criminals in the business of kidnapping, banditry and a host of other heinous crimes ravaging the eastern region.
A 5-point communique issued by the LP state assembly lawmakers in Awka at the weekend and signed by the caucus leader Hon. Barr. Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego and 10 others, has it that LP lawmakers commended the Southeast Governors, Senators and House of Representatives members on their recent resolve to interface with the Federal Government for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

This they said is in line with the position of several Nigerian leaders such as Chief Edwin Clark, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and several others. That they also decided to lend their voices in appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to as a matter of urgency, release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu so as to douse the current ravaging insecurity in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

Other resolutions in the communique include an appeal to the Governors of the Southeast to grant full financial autonomy to State Houses of Assembly in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the principles of Separation of Powers. This they said will go a long way to enhance and ensure more robust assemblies by enhancing their functionalities in the area of lawmaking, oversight and other attendant legislative duties.
The South-East Labour Party State Assembly Caucus also called on the Federal Government to quicken resolution of the current minimum wage impasse the governments, organised private sector and labour unions. The LP lawmakers held that with the current harsh economic realities in the country, it will certainly be wrong for the Federal Government not to hearken to the voice of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress who represent the voice of the suffering masses.
The lawmakers equally declared that they abhored the recent hasty incarceration of one Hon. Bright Ngege who is a candidate in a rerun election in Enugu state; whom they claimed his prison sentence was politically motivated. They however called on the National Judicial Council to look into the case and ensure that justice is done.
The South-East Labour Party House of Assembly Caucus also appealed to the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly to as a matter urgent public importance ensure that in accordance with the standing rules of the House, the Minority positions due to the Labour Party are given to them without further delay.
They therefore argued that since the Enugu State House of Assembly has only two political parties in the current legislature, it is only natural that Labour Party is now in the minority and should be entitled to their minority leadership positions. That it is only right and just that the positions be returned to the Labour Party to ensure equity and fairness.
