KANO – Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF) has called on Kano state Government to expedite action in the establishment of Kano State Disability Commission.

The President of the KCSF, Mohammed Bello who spoke in Kano, explained that the creation of the Disability Commission would help in safeguarding the rights of people with disabilities, promote their inclusion, and enhance their well-being in Kano state.

Bello said, “While precise population data for persons with disabilities (PWDS) in Kano State remains limited, the Nigeria Association of Persons with Disabilities, Kano Chapter, estimated that 43,418 children with special needs resided in the state as of 2022.”

“This population continues to encounter significant challenges, including limited access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, coupled with pervasive discrimination and neglect.”

He however noted that, having a Disability Commission in place is paramount to ensure the effective representation and addressing of the rights and needs of people with disabilities.

“This dedicated body would serve as a crucial oversight mechanism for the implementation of disability policies, facilitate robust advocacy efforts, and provide a vital platform for people with disabilities to articulate their concerns and advocate for their rights.”

Bello further explained that, the creation of a Commission for Persons with Disabilities (PWDS) in Kano would align with the government’s social welfare agenda by prioritizing inclusivity in it’s affairs.

“Establishing this Commission would undoubtedly enhance Kano’s reputation, positioning it as a progressive state committed to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS), particularly Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).”

Speaking from the economic perspective, the KCSF President said, people with Disabilities represent a significantly underutilized human resource despite constituting a substantial segment of the population.

“According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), excluding individuals with disabilities from the workforce can result in a reduction of a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by as much as 7%.”

He explained that, establishing a dedicated Commission for the PWDS, the Kano State government can unlock the immense potential of PWDS, thereby contributing significantly to economic growth and fostering social cohesion.

“This initiative would not only enhance the lives of PWDS but also cultivate a more inclusive and productive society.”

“Furthermore, we implore the Kano State House of Assembly, traditional rulers,
religious leaders, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to lend their unwavering support to this critical initiative and actively contribute to its successful implementation.”
