Angry students from the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, have set fire to the residence of Provost Haruna Saidu-Sauwa and damaged his vehicle during a violent protest. The unrest was sparked by claims that the college management had extorted N23 million from the students.

The dispute arose from a fee hike related to index registration for 250 graduating students. According to a source within the college, the issue began with a newly introduced public health program, initially affiliated with the Reproductive Health and Public Health Association of Nigeria. The college later merged the program with the Environmental Health Department to ensure certification. As a result, students were asked to pay an additional N65,000 for index registration, on top of the N30,000 they had already paid.

Outraged by what they saw as extortion, the students launched a violent protest, throwing stones and attacking vehicles before setting the provost’s residence ablaze. Staff members fled the scene before security forces arrived to contain the situation.

The college has yet to officially respond to the allegations or the damages caused during the unrest. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
