Lagos lawmakers insist Obasa’s removal Legal, as DSS frees detained legislators

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reaffirmed that the removal of the former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was carried out in strict compliance with constitutional provisions.
Speaking after an engagement with the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha, the lawmakers stated that the decision followed due process as outlined in the 1999 Constitution and the Powers and Privileges Act.
According to the lawmakers, Sections 92 and 96 of the Constitution provide clear guidelines for the election and removal of a Speaker, granting the Assembly the autonomy to regulate its internal affairs without external interference.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, has exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people. The decision was made through a democratic process with the required majority,” the lawmakers said in a statement signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode.

They further warned that any attempt to challenge the decision would amount to undermining the authority granted to the legislature by the Constitution.
Commending the professionalism of the DSS in handling the matter, the Assembly members appreciated the Lagos DSS Command for ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement.
They confirmed that all detained members of the Assembly had regained their freedom.
The lawmakers reiterated their commitment to effective governance and called on all stakeholders, including the executive arm and the public, to respect the sanctity of legislative proceedings and avoid undue interference.
