Rosemary Akan, a standout athlete from Lagos State University (LASU), has clinched the gold medal in the 100m women’s hurdles at the ongoing All African University Games (FASU 2024).
This marks Akan’s first international gold medal, a victory she described as a dream come true.
Overjoyed by her triumph, Akan expressed that the win has fueled her desire to train harder and aim for greater heights, possibly representing Nigeria on the global stage, much like her inspiration, Tobi Amusan.
“It’s an amazing feeling, honestly. I was really nervous at first because this was my debut in an international competition,” Akan shared.
“But after rehearsing and focusing on my first steps, I gained confidence and told myself I could do it — and I did!”
Balancing her academics with her athletics was no easy feat, but Akan credits her success to her perseverance and faith.
“It hasn’t been easy, juggling training with classes. But I thank God for everything.”
Akan also took the opportunity to praise her coaching team, acknowledging their pivotal role in her development.

“Coach Fatai, Coach Jelo, and Coach Jackson have been a great support system. Their encouragement helped me push through. My family, especially my mother’s prayers, also contributed to this victory.”
Looking ahead, Akan has her sights set on broader goals in athletics.
“I’m not stopping here. I want to excel not only in the 100m hurdles but also in the 200m. I believe there’s still more to achieve. I’m looking forward to representing Nigeria and following in Tobi Amusan’s footsteps.”
Her coach, Abraham Jackson, expressed pride in Akan’s dedication and progress.
“I’m really impressed by her performance. Despite this being her first international outing, she handled it brilliantly. I always tell her that winning requires commitment, and she has embodied that through her hard work.”
Coach Jackson further highlighted Akan’s leadership qualities at LASU, where she serves as the female coordinator of the university’s athletics team.
“She’s been a key figure in my team, and her success today is well-deserved,” he added.
Akan’s victory not only brings pride to LASU but also positions her as a rising star in Nigerian athletics, with the potential to make her mark on the international scene.
