BENIN – Dr  Kingsley Oghogho Okundaye, the National Coordinator of Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress has described the Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy as a welcome development.

Dr Okundaye who stated this in a statement in Benin said the local government autonomy will be of great benefit to the people in the grassroot as it will also open a path to rural economic development.

On the implementation of the autonomy by the leadership of the various local governments that will  yield positive results to benefit the people, Okundaye said it will solely depend on their clear vision, focus, and commitment and to identify the most pressing needs of their people.

Dr Okundaye, who is also the Labour Party National Transition Committee Chairman for Mobilization and Recruitment also
advised the local government chairmen not to see the autonomy judgement as a gift and opportunity for looting but an avenue to put in intensive developmental zeal which will result in people’s oriented  projects.

According to the Labour party chieftain, the judgement should be an open avenue to streamline the running of the local government administration in the country.

“This judgement should be seen as a blessing to the masses and a situation where it will turn out to be a curse rather than the good intentions because of  bad management that may characterise the 774 local government system in the country should be avoided.

    Okundaye however sugested
that mechanism should be put in place to serve as checks and balances, especially to check mismanagement of the funds
so that the chairmen of the local government councils can be accountable to the people from time to time.
