James Maddison’s early goal proved decisive as Tottenham Hotspur edged Manchester United 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday, piling further misery on the struggling Red Devils.

Maddison struck in the 13th minute, capitalising on a chaotic sequence inside the box. Lucas Bergvall had initially tested the goalkeeper with a powerful effort towards the bottom right corner, but after a fine save, Maddison reacted quickest, rifling home the rebound to give Spurs a vital lead.

United had a chance to strike first when Rasmus Højlund controlled a pass inside the box and fired a low shot towards the centre of the goal, only for the goalkeeper to make a smart save.

The visitors spurned another golden opportunity midway through the first half when Alejandro Garnacho latched onto an inch-perfect pass inside the box but blazed his effort high over the bar.

Moments later, Mathys Tel unleashed a thunderous shot towards the left side of the goal, but Andre Onana produced a brilliant stop to keep United in the contest.

In the second half, Garnacho again came close, meeting a precise pass in the box and shooting towards the middle of the goal, but Guglielmo Vicario reacted superbly to deny him.

United’s best chance to salvage a point fell to Joshua Zirkzee in the 72nd minute. The forward connected with a pinpoint cross and powered a header from the penalty spot, only to see it drift agonisingly wide of the left post.

Spurs held firm to secure all three points, dealing another setback to Ruben Amorim’s struggling side.
