Malawi’s football sensation, Temwa Chawinga, has set a new milestone in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), breaking Sam Kerr’s record for the most goals scored in a single season.
Chawinga, 26, found the back of the net 19 times in her debut season with the Kansas City Current.
The prolific striker’s achievement was confirmed on Sunday, following a post by renowned sports journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Chawinga, who also represents Malawi’s national team, made history by surpassing Kerr’s previous mark while leading her team to a 1-0 victory over Bay FC, a win that secured Kansas City’s third position in the league standings.

Having played for Swedish club Kvarnsvedens IK and Chinese side Wuhan Jianghan University before joining the NWSL, Chawinga has demonstrated exceptional form this season.
Her 19 goals came from 24 appearances, with an impressive scoring rate of one goal every 109 minutes. She registered 103 shots, boasting a shot conversion rate of 18.63%.
While Chawinga now holds the record for the most goals in a single NWSL season, Sam Kerr still remains the league’s all-time top scorer with 77 goals, 13 more than the next closest, Lynn Williams, who has 64.
Chawinga’s feat not only underlines her individual brilliance but also signals the growing influence of African talents in top football leagues worldwide.
