A 30-year-old man, Ikechukwu Micheal, was on Monday, arraigned before an FCT High Court, Zuba, Abuja, over an alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Umoh Inah, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 21, 2022 when he had a carnal knowledge of a 17-year-old girl.
He said that the offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Defence Counsel, Lawrence John, prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail in line with Sections 165 and162 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
John said that the defendant was presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and promised to provide a reliable surety if he was granted bail.
Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya, granted the defendant bail with one surety who must be related to him, and must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 14.
Justice Ogbonnaya also ordered the defendant to always appear in court for his trial or risked revocation of the bail.
She adjourned the matter until Nov. 4 for hearing.
