    ENUGU – There was a massive turnout of voters on Saturday during the local government election conducted by Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) on Saturday despite the initial delay in arrival of voting materials at the polling unit.

    Our correspondent reports that accreditation and voting commenced at about 12:15pm with people showing their enthusiasm to vote for candidates of their choice.

    It was reported that security was tightened in Enugu and its environs as Armoured Personnel Carrier belonging to the police bomb squad and other security vehicles were seen stationed at strategic positions at the ENSIEC office and other locations in the city.

    Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Enugu State governor, Dr Peter Mbah described the local government elections in the state as the most peaceful in recent times.

    The governor who stated this after casting vote at polling unit 007 Mbaguzo Ashishi Owo in Nkanu East Local Government Areas at exactly 12:50pm.

    The governor who waited patiently for his turn in the queue to cast his vote, expressed his administration’s readiness to support those who would emerge winners irrespective of political party affiliation.

    Also speaking, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Udenu Local Government Area, Chief Aka Eze Aka after casting his vote in his Agamede Isienu polling unit in Obollo-Eke ward, described the process as seamless and credible, adding that the election was a reminder that democracy is alive in Enugu State.

    He said that if elected, he will ensure a massive agricultural revolution across all the communities in Udenu Local Government.

    Aka also promised to provide basic infrastructure such health centres, roads, markets and improve on education in the area in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s agenda.

    Also, the President General of the Owo town union, Chief John Ogbu-okeke and the crown prince of Owo, Chief Joseph Nnajieze, who commended the people of Owo for coming out en-mass to exercise their franchise, expressed optimism that their choice of candidate would emulate the footsteps of the governor in his developmental strides.

    The Special Adviser to the governor on Legislative matters, Chief Paul Nnajiofor who is also from the community attributed the peaceful process of the election to the good leadership of the governor.
