Ghanaian football legend Michael Essien has expressed pride in maintaining an unbeaten record against Nigeria throughout his career. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder, who played in two matches against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, won both encounters. One of the highlights of his career was scoring a crucial goal in Ghana’s 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In an interview with Joy Sports, Essien reflected on his rivalry with Nigeria, calling the 2008 AFCON match one of his favorite games. “My favorite game will be against Nigeria in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. I never lost against Nigeria while on the pitch,” he said proudly.

Essien also mentioned a friendly match against Nigeria in London, where he played, and noted that he did not participate in the 2006 AFCON match against the Super Eagles. “If I’m on the pitch, we don’t lose,” Essien remarked, referring to the 2008 AFCON match where his goal helped Ghana secure a win after trailing.

With 59 caps and nine goals for the Ghanaian national team, Essien played a key role in helping Ghana qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in 2006. He was a pivotal figure in the Black Stars’ squad across several AFCON tournaments, although injury kept him out of the 2010 edition.

Now retired, Essien currently serves as an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland. His playing career officially ended in 2020, but his legacy, especially his unbeaten record against Nigeria, remains a proud chapter in his storied football journey.
