Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the landmark Supreme Court judgment on Thursday, which granted financial autonomy to local government areas. According to Karimi, this ruling is a commendable step forward.
According to him, Tinubu deserves to be honored in the nation’s “Hall of Fame” for empowering the judiciary to function independently, leading to such a historic adjudication.

Karimi, speaking to journalists on Friday in Abuja, assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would ensure state governments comply with constitutional mandates. He also emphasized the legislature’s commitment to amending the constitution to address contentious issues. Key areas of focus include transferring the responsibility for conducting local council elections from state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I thank Mr. President for mustering the courage to do the right thing. Since 1999, the third tier of government has been virtually nonexistent, with state governments treating local governments as mere appendages. No President has been able to change this situation. However, within just one year, President Tinubu has returned the local governments to their rightful owners—the masses. Properly operated local governments will ensure a better existence for our people. President Tinubu recognized this need and courageously took decisive action.”
He noted that the battle is not yet over, stating, “Some state governors will fight back. President Tinubu allowed the judiciary to operate freely in this instance, despite being a first-term President who may desire a comeback in 2027.
Tinubu’s actions, he stated, were driven by his unwavering concern for Nigeria’s masses. In his words, “I align myself with the President on this. It takes a man of the people, a man of courage, and a man who truly understands and feels the pulse of the masses to make this happen. He has extensive experience as a former Senator and Governor. Former President Buhari had promised to push this forward but lacked the necessary focus and political will to see it through. This will not end here. The National Assembly, through our oversight responsibilities, will ensure that revenue from the federal purse is allocated correctly. We will ensure that the Supreme Court’s judgment is fully implemented and that allocations are distributed among the three tiers of government in accordance with the law”.
Karimi emphasized that the next crucial step is to ensure that local government elections are conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He pointed out that the National Assembly has a responsibility to amend the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution to guarantee the election of credible individuals to local government positions. This, he noted, “will enable capable individuals to contest local government elections, ensuring experienced leadership to manage funds effectively and prioritize grassroots development.
A significant amount of money allocated to local governments over the years has either been taken over by state governments through joint accounts or remains unaccounted for. President Tinubu will be remembered for this historic achievement, which could assure him a second term.”
