The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) said it has received a report of a mining pit collapse at Galkogo village in Shiroro Local Council of Niger State.

According to the statement issued by the Director General of the agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, the mining site belongs to a company named “African Minerals and Logistics Limited.”

It explained that the cause of the collapse was due to the rainfall impacts that softened the soil.

Arah added that it was gathered that one person had been confirmed dead, six people were rescued with severe injuries, while about 30, including the site manager, Alh Ibrahim Ishaku, were still trapped as of Monday, 3rd June, 2024.

The rescuers had to run for their lives as the mine site kept collapsing inside Galkogo village due to the unacceptable nature of that environment as a result of banditry.

It was further learned that excavators have been deployed for the rescue operations.

The agency is also in receipt of reports of persistent banditry activities at Shiroro and Mashegu local councils.

The bandit attack occurred at Adogo Mallam village on Sunday, noting that six persons were kidnapped.

On Monday at Tunga Kawo communities located 3 kilometres away from Erena in Shiroro Local Council, armed bandits also attacked the community and abducted over 20 persons with hundreds of cows rustled.
