Jose Mourinho has received a one-match suspension and been slapped with a fine of nearly £15,000 following his reaction to Fenerbahce’s thrilling 3-2 Super Lig win at Trabzonspor.

The Portuguese manager, who famously fell during an attempted celebratory knee slide at the final whistle on Sunday, faced charges for “unsportsmanlike behaviour towards opposing team fans” and for actions that allegedly “diminished the value of Turkish football and … discredited the impartiality of the referees and other match officials” in a fiery post-match interview.

The Turkish Football Federation announced that Mourinho would face a “prohibition of access to the dressing room and bench” for one official game, alongside a fine of 58,500 Turkish lira – approximately £1,300 – and an additional penalty of 600,000 Turkish lira – about £13,500 – for his “hurtful” comments, which was reduced from an initial 900,000 Turkish lira.

In his controversial interview, the ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United manager, who witnessed his team concede two penalties, targeted VAR Atilla Karaoglan, stating: “I know what I was told even before I came. I didn’t believe. It is even worse than I was told.”

Mourinho, who is reportedly eyeing the Newcastle United job if Eddie Howe departs his position at St James’ Park, added: “It’s more difficult because we play against our opponents, good opponents like Trabzonspor are, but we play against the system, and to play against the system is the most difficult thing.”

Alongside the penalties levelled at Mourinho, Fenerbahce’s vice-president Acun Ilicali – who also owns Championship team Hull City – was hit with a 400,000 Turkish Lira fine (approximately £9,000) for “unsportsmanlike remarks”. A comprehensive statement released on Fenerbahce’s official website featured Ilicali labelling the game’s officiating as “a complete scandal” and alleging that VAR had “massacred” the match.
