Team Nasarawa, along with contingents from other states, showcased their colors at the opening ceremony of the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State on Thursday.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh declared the Games open, emphasizing the importance of grassroots sports in revitalizing Nigeria’s sports sector.
“These Games symbolize hope for the future, focusing on grassroots sports development, which is essential in nurturing young talents,” Enoh remarked.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside Osun and Oyo Governors Ademola Adeleke and Seyi Makinde, were present at the event.
Ahead of the Games, Nasarawa State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Jafaru Ango, addressed the contingent, encouraging them to make the state proud.
“The athletes were chosen in areas where Nasarawa has medal hopes,” Ango stated. “We appreciate the support of Governor Abdullahi Sule and encourage you to give your best.”
Bashir Bassey, speaking on behalf of the coaches, pledged their dedication to representing the state with discipline and excellence.
Team Nasarawa will compete in 14 events, including boxing, judo, weightlifting, and volleyball. Led by Director of Sports Lawrence Shammah, the 137-member delegation includes 77 athletes and 14 coaches.
The Sun reports that the Games, featuring over 4,500 athletes, will conclude on September 19, 2024.
