AWKA: Nawfia community in Njikoka local council of Anambra State has began mourning of five people, including strangers killed in the community on Sunday, October 6.

It will be recalled that on the fateful day some unknown gunmen arrived the Umukwa-Umuariam axis of the town at about 8:00 pm in Lexus RX and a Toyota Sienna and opened fire, killing five persons and injuring many others including a small child.

In a statement signed by the President General of Nawfia Progressive Union (NPU) Chief Daniel Okoye, the victims included two indigenes, namely: Samuel Onyebuchi Nnatuanya aged 26 years and Chukwuebuka Ifeanyichukwu Nwonukwue aged 29 years old. Both hailed from Adagbe Mmimi village, Nawfia.

The three other victims were strangers living in Nawfia. One of them, according to Okoye hailed from Ukwulu in Dunukofia local council of the state, another one was from Ebonyi State, while the other was from the Northern part of the country.

An AK-47 and a shotgun were used in the cowardly attack, he wrote.

Okoye also dismissed speculations that the victims were cultists, saying there is no evidence to support such claims.

He also pointed out that there is no evidence that the attackers were from a  neighboring community, urging police to conduct thorough investigation into the killings.

He wrote: “Many stories and theories have been formed despite a lack of evidence to prove them. As of now, there is no indication that the killers were sent from a neighboring town. There’s also no proof to support that the murders were cult-related. We will not rule out any party at this point and will not jump to any conclusions. We plead with Ndi Nawfia and the general public to do the same”.

While calling for calm and patience, he pledged that Nawfia Progressive Union and town leaders will do everything in their power to expose the culprits.

He also called on the Police to hasten and do proper investigation saying that “So far, their response and approach have been inadequate. They should do all in their power to seek out and apprehend these serial killers and bring peace back to our environs”.
