In an unprecedented operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a staggering 338,200 bottles of codeine-based syrup, valued at over ₦1.19 billion, in Port Harcourt.
A statement by NDLEA’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi on Sunday, said the seizure, conducted in collaboration with Customs and security agencies, unfolded during a meticulous inspection of two watch-listed containers at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex, Onne, Rivers State, on January 9th and 10th, 2025.
The breakthrough highlights the Agency’s relentless efforts to dismantle drug syndicates targeting the nation.
In Abuja, NDLEA operatives launched a daring midnight raid on January 11th, uncovering a 40ft trailer loaded with 2,217.6 kilograms of skunk, a potent cannabis strain, at an abandoned fuel station in the Kagini-Kubwa area.
The illicit haul was being offloaded into six vehicles for distribution to Northern states. Among the seized vehicles were a Toyota Van, a Camry, a Sienna bus, a JAC Hilux truck, a Toyota Corolla, and a Vento Passat. A suspect, 42-year-old Isaac Monday Desmond, was arrested on the scene.

Adding to its streak of success, the NDLEA apprehended Bariu Aliu, the traditional chief priest of the Igunuko Shrine in Lagos, after a three-month manhunt.
Aliu is alleged to be the leader of a cartel linked to the seizure of 2,760 kilograms of skunk last year.
In Kano, a raid on Zaria Road led to the arrest of Habibu Ya’u, 23, and the confiscation of 24.2 kilograms of cannabis and 40,800 pills of opioids, including tramadol.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the operatives for their relentless efforts in reducing drug supply and demand nationwide. He reiterated the Agency’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse through operations and community sensitisation under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign.
