    Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Tony Ojukwu, has sought improved working conditions for workers.In a statement to commemorate the 2024 International Workers Day, globally themed, “Climate change, safety and Health at work place,” he recognised the reshaping of societies and economies by workers globally.

      
    Ojukwu said the occasion underscores the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of Nigerian workers in the face of the unprecedented high cost of living in the country.

     “The NHRC remains unwavering in its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, including workers,” he stated. Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Obinna Nwakonye, quoted Ojukwu as saying that the commission is dedicated to creating a comfortable environment where all workers would be treated with respect and dignity.

    SIMILARLY, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has praised workers for their resilience and doggedness for a better Nigeria.

       
    He communicated his stance in a goodwill message, noting: “Despite the countless obstacles and hurdles that may stand in our way, you, the backbone of our society, remain unwavering in your resolve to contribute to the growth and development of our beloved nation.
     
    “From the bustling streets of Lagos to the serene villages of the North, from the bustling markets of Onitsha to the bustling ports of Port Harcourt, your labour forms the foundation upon which our nation stands.  
     
    “Whether you are toiling in the fields under the scorching sun or labouring in factories amidst the hum of machinery, your efforts are the lifeblood of our economy and the driving force behind our progress.”
     
     He continued: “But beyond the tangible contributions you daily make to our nation’s development, it is your unwavering patriotism, resilience and determination that truly inspire us all. 

     “In the face of economic hardships, political uncertainties and social injustices, you continue to stand your ground, holding fast to your belief in a brighter future for our country.”
