The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo on Saturday.

Benin Republic opted for a defensive approach early on, allowing the Super Eagles to control the game from the outset.

In the 17th minute, Ademola Lookman had a golden opportunity to put Nigeria ahead, but the Atalanta winger missed the target after being played through by Wilfred Ndidi.

Benin’s goalkeeper, Saturnin Alagbe, made a brilliant save to deny Samuel Chukwueze two minutes before the half-hour mark. On the other end, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was called into action to stop a dangerous free-kick from Steve Mounie five minutes before halftime.

As the first half was drawing to a close, Lookman delivered a moment of brilliance, dribbling past three defenders before finding the back of the net to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.

The Super Eagles had the first chance of the second half, but Lookman failed to capitalize. Benin Republic began to find their rhythm, with Mounie testing Nwabali from close range.

Nigeria secured their second goal 12 minutes from time, with substitute Victor Osimhen slotting home after being set up by Wilfred Ndidi.

Lookman then sealed the win with his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute, capping off an impressive performance.

The Super Eagles will face Rwanda in their next qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Tuesday.
