Some policemen have been caught on Osogbo-Iwo road extorting money from Nigerians.
The matter came to light after the Speaker of Osun State Assembly Adewale Egbedun who was also moving via the route observed the illegal activities of the police officers.
The 38-year-old speaker quickly stopped his convoy and help some youth recover the money that was extorted from them.
According to the video trending online, the police officers confessed receiving transfers to the tune of N75,000 from helpless Nigerians.
Giving update on the incident, the Public Relation Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Kehinde Longe, has acted on the matter.
“The officers have been arrested, and necessary action would be taken. The PPRO Osun has been ordered to update us on the actions taken. We have zero tolerance for extortion and corruption in general,” Adejobi stated.
The PPRO added that the IGP has made it clear that there will be no room for any form of corruption.
“In fact, at the last IGP’s conference with senior officers in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP warned that no officer should bring money or gifts to him.
“He said, “I don’t need your money. Don’t bring any money to me. Use your legitimate money to improve the policing of your area of responsibility. So this goes a long way to describe the stuff the IGP is made of and the type of leadership he preaches in the NPF.
“So, no officer should use IGP’s name to extort. No way. We have sent out IGP’S monitoring squad to arrest any erring officer, not only the Police, but other law enforcement agents who dwell in corruption and inappropriate behaviors.
“This is the original tradition, and we are reverting back to it. We need to sanitize our system and work with the government at all levels to inject sanity and decency into our system in all ramifications,” Adejobi further stated.
