Young Nigerian midfielder Joel Yakubu has officially signed with Czech Premier League club Slovan Liberec on a three-year contract. The move was confirmed by his former club, Mahanaim FC, following Yakubu’s successful medical.
At just 18 years old, Yakubu, nicknamed “Spirit,” has already gained attention for his skill and vision as a midfielder.
Mahanaim FC, based in Abuja, expressed pride in Yakubu’s development and confirmed the transfer in a statement: “We are proud to announce the transfer of our midfielder Joel Yakubu to FC Slovan Liberec. Yakubu shared his excitement on social media, writing, “Thrilled to announce I’ve signed my first professional contract with Slovan Liberec! Grateful to Mahanaim FC for the foundation, and thanks to my family, friends, coaches, and supporters. I can’t wait to start this journey!”
Yakubu’s standout performances for Mahanaim FC caught the eye of Slovan Liberec scouts. Known for his ability to both score and assist, he has quickly made an impression in his new club, scoring in his debut for Slovan Liberec’s B-team.
Slovan Liberec head coach Jakub Harant praised Yakubu’s potential, saying, “Joel has quick ball control, a great understanding of the game, and a calmness when finishing. We believe he will continue to develop and play an increasingly important role at the club.”
Yakubu’s move to Europe comes shortly after his former teammate Yahaya Lawali joined Czech club MFK Karvina. Now, Yakubu has the opportunity to showcase his talent on a larger stage as he embarks on his professional career in Europe.
