LAGOS – Prof. Charles Anosike, the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has advocated for issuance of early warnings to mitigate the hazard of climate change in the country.
Speaking in his keynote address at the annual Civil-Military Conference, which held in Abuja earlier in the week, Anosike reiterated the NiMet’s efforts in building human capacity and sharing knowledge to address the impacts of climate change, increasing frequency of extreme weather events, and prolonged climate-induced conflicts.
The conference with the theme: ‘Whole-of-Society Approach to National Security and Development,’ the Nimet boss said was necessary to address the negative impact of climate change in our environments.
He said: “It is crucial to issue warnings early, ensure people are aware of them, take action quickly and most importantly, establish policies that incentivise and facilitate the right actions in response to climate change.”

The conference was aimed at consolidating the gains of the 2023 edition, build public trust, enhance aviation and space safety, counter fake news, blackmail, and extremist propaganda, improve the coordination of military and civilian stakeholders across communities and address migration management.
It also intended to enhance counter-terrorism strategies and foster multi-stakeholder collaboration to achieve national security and development.
Anosike assured that Nimet would continue to support the Armed Forces through the provision of reliable, accurate and timely meteorological services and the development and dissemination of climate-smart solutions.
He emphasised that these solutions enable the country’s military forces to operate effectively in all conditions, whether on land, water, or air where weather information was necessary.
He further reiterated NiMet’s efforts in building human capacity and sharing knowledge to address the impacts of climate change, increasing frequency of extreme weather events, and prolonged climate-induced conflicts.
