Nasarawa United Football Club of Lafia, yesterday, became the first team at the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight Championship to gain promotion to the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) when they defeated Sokoto United 2-1.
Nasarawa United have been imperial at the championship holding at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium (The Cathedral), Enugu, winning their first two games to make a quick return to the NPFL after their relegation last season.
The Solid Miners, which won the championship’s opening match against El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri with a slim 1-0 victory on Saturday, came from behind to record a win over Sokoto United at the third match of the day two of the championship.
Sokoto United took a surprise lead at the early minutes of the first half, when Nasarawa United’s defence line went flat, giving striker Adama Kizito room to slam the ball beyond goalkeeper.
But the Solid Miners woke up immediately after the goal and took over control of the pitch, resulting in their equaliser through Anas Yusuf, who was eventually awarded the games Man of the Match.
The Solid Miners sealed the three points through an Umar Ibrahim goal in the second half of the game.
Sokoto United’s loss, second in the championship, has punctured their quest for the NPFL ticket. They lost their first game against Sporting Supreme of Abuja at the weekend.
