Iro Ukpai, the Governorship Candidate and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Abia State during the 2023 general elections, along with his running mate, Chiedozie Josiah, have officially stepped down from the party and switched to the Labour Party (LP).
This announcement was made at Governor Alex Otti’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia on Saturday.
Additionally, various prominent members of the NNPP, including David Urum and other former candidates from the 2023 elections, also transitioned to the LP during this event.

Ukpai explained that their decision to leave their party was influenced by the progress he observed in Governor Otti’s administration under the Labour Party.
The new LP members received the LP flags.
However, a key NNPP member in Abia, Mr. Bright Ulonwa, expressed confidence that the party will maintain its strength even after the departure of Ukpai Iro and his followers.
“The exit of a few persons cannot shake the foundation of the party in the Abia State as we will even be stronger than before”, Ulonwa said.
