The Plateau State Police Command has launched a full-scale enforcement of the third-party motor vehicle insurance policy, in compliance with a directive issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
The operation, which commenced on February 1, has seen several vehicles impounded across the state, with their owners facing prosecution for failing to comply with the mandatory insurance policy.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Plateau, Alfred Alabo, stated that Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina had ordered all divisions within the state to strictly enforce the directive.
He emphasized that the move was not targeted at victimizing motorists but aimed at ensuring road safety and protecting citizens against financial risks in the event of accidents.
“Our men on patrol and stop-and-search operations have been directed to ensure full compliance. While I cannot provide an exact number at the moment, several vehicles have been impounded, and their owners are currently facing prosecution in court,” Alabo revealed.

The police crackdown comes as part of a nationwide enforcement campaign spearheaded by the IGP, mandating all state commands to take decisive action against motorists who fail to obtain third-party insurance.
The policy, which is a legal requirement in Nigeria, provides compensation to third parties in cases of accidents involving insured vehicles.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent monitoring the exercise in Plateau State observed police officers stationed at major highways and city streets, conducting rigorous stop-and-search operations.
Private and commercial vehicle owners were subjected to thorough checks, with those unable to present valid insurance documents having their vehicles confiscated on the spot.
