ABUJA – Following the recent flood disaster that hit Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, the Northern Senators Forum (NSF), has applauded the federal government for releasing N3 billion to states to mitigate such incidents.

A statement by the Forum on Thursday, noted the loss of lives and property of residents of the state as a result of the flooding incident which was caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam.

Recall that on Tuesday the Dam (a major one) collapsed causing the state’s worst flooding in 30 years and forced residents to flee their homes.

A reaction to the incident by the state government said on Wednesday that the dam was at capacity due to unusually high rains.

Chairman of the Forum, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, in the statement disclosed the Forum’s desire to see states come up with plans against future occurrence.

“We urge all states to take responsibility and develop strategic plans to address climate change and prevent further environmental disasters,” he said.

The Northern Senators further commended the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, for his “swift response” to assess the situation and “provide leadership during this challenging time.”

It said that the VP demonstrated “the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities.”

This is as it noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of three billion naira for each state to address flood and disaster relief efforts was a timely intervention which will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of affected citizens.

The statement added that the Forum extended its “deepest condolences to the people and government of Borno State over the loss of lives and property resulting from the collapse of the Alau Dam. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those displaced by this devastating flood.

“The Senate will continue to pursue legislation and policies that mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote sustainable development.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno State and assure them of our support during this difficult period.”
