The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to improving professionalism and competency in Nigeria’s sports sector.
He made this pledge during a courtesy visit on Tuesday by officials of the National Association of Physical, Health Education, Research, Sports, and Dance (NAPHER.SD).
Speaking at the meeting, Dikko acknowledged the strategic role NAPHER.SD plays in the country’s sports ecosystem, particularly its contributions to the drafting of the NSC Bill.

He assured the association of the Commission’s readiness to work closely with it to achieve shared goals.
“NAPHER.SD holds a critical and strategic position in our nation’s sports development. We appreciate your valuable input into the NSC Bill and welcome your new recommendations.
“To move forward, we must deliberately bring in qualified professionals to manage various departments within the Commission, and we look forward to a strong partnership with your organization,” he said.
Dikko highlighted the significant economic potential of sports, emphasizing its contributions to social cohesion, security, and human development.

He projected that within the next two years, sports could emerge as one of Nigeria’s key industries, significantly boosting the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
In her remarks, NAPHER.SD President, Professor Florence Adeyanju, outlined areas where the association could collaborate with the NSC.
These include grassroots sports programs, talent identification, policy formulation, conflict resolution, gender equity initiatives, and research to establish fitness norms for Nigerians.
She also called for the appointment of qualified professionals to sports departments, improved training for technical staff, enhanced grassroots sports development, and a focus on athlete welfare and corporate sponsorships.
Professor Adeyanju added, “It is crucial that the NSC works closely with the Ministry of Education to integrate sports into the education system and leverage research experts for evidence-based decision-making.”
Key officials present at the meeting included Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NAPHER.SD Vice President; Professor Franz Atare, Secretary-General; Dr. Joy Madaki, Treasurer; and other members such as Dr. Paul Onyeudo, Mallam Salihu Abubakar, Barr. Musa Amadu, Hon. Farouk Yarma, Mr. Clement Nwankpa, and Mr. Jude Anyadufu.
The session also had in attendance notable NAPHER.SD chieftains, including Dr. Ayo Abdulrahaman, Dr. Robinson Okosun, Dr. Sylvester Ikuejamoye, Dr. Oluwasogo Ogunleye, Mr. Bola Orodele, Mrs. Sheba Jefferson, and Mrs. Hulda Nkwocha.
