The  Lagos State House of Assembly has beefed up security ahead of today’s plenary session, amidst speculation of a potential showdown.

Many predicted trouble after former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed on January 13, 2025, due to allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, claims he’s still the Speaker.

Obasa was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who will be presiding over her third session today.

However, the former speaker, who returned to Lagos on Saturday, denied all corruption allegations.

He called the allegations against him “impossible” and insisting that he remains the Speaker until properly removed.

Obasa said: “Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion?” and “How can they say we bought one Hilux bus for N1 billion each and that we bought 40 pieces for N40 billion?”

To ensure order, the Lagos State Police Command has assured that they will maintain calmness outside the assembly and throughout the state.

Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale stated that while the police have no business inside the assembly, it’s his duty to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The CP said: “I don’t see any breakdown of law in the state and if there is, it is inside the assembly and I am not allowed to enter the assembly. But outside the assembly, there won’t be any breakdown of law and order in Lagos State, in whatever location because that’s my job as a policeman.”

He added that “People will genuinely move about with their businesses, but anybody congregating anywhere to foment trouble will be decisively dispersed, and if they don’t (cooperate), they will be arrested if they conduct themselves in an unruly manner. Everyone has the right to assembly but there is also what we call law and order.”

Meanwhile, the assembly has also taken measures to secure the complex, issuing a notice requiring staff members and legislative aides to present valid identification cards to access the premises.
