PORT HARCOURT – The Chairman of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, Retired Justice, Enebeli has declared that the October, 5 2024 date for the conduct of Local Government Council elections is sacrosanct amid speculations that the polls may not hold, owing to litigations trailing it.
Enebeli gave the assurance during a training for its staff in Port Harcourt, citing the state electoral law and the recent judgment of the Supreme Court which empowered the electoral body to conduct the scheduled elections.
He further emphasized that there is no current judgment or any other impediment against the conduct of the local government council elections, saying that RSIEC as the electoral umpire in the state is fully ready and prepared for the conduct of the elections on October, 5 2024.

Addressing the Trainers for Rivers RSIEC Staff, retired Justice Enebeli described the exercise as an investment that would help the electoral process have integrity.
Justice Enebeli, while reminding the trainers that their role is to train its ad-hoc staff and other electoral officers, assured that the commission remained determined to engender a free, fair, credible and violence free elections in the state.
Retired Justice Enebeli further disclosed that out of 19 registered political parties, 18 were participating in the elections with over 300 contestants.
He also assured that the names of contestants who scaled through the screening will be published between Monday and Tuesday.
