Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has released N661 million for the payment of 2024/2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for SS3 Students in Public Schools across the State.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Education Hon. Wemi Jones in his office on Tuesday in Lokoja.

Eighteen Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Four (18,734) has been enrolled to benefit from the release of the fund.

He noted that the immediate past Administration of Governor Yahaya Bello signed into law the Kogi State Free Examination, Registration Bill for Kogi State Students and Pupils in Public Schools and Other Matters Connected therewith; and it has become the responsibility of Government to pay for all the Internal and External Examination Fees for Students and Pupils in Public Primary and Secondary Schools in the State.

The Commissioner said that the Government of Ahmed Usman Ododo has continued in the legacies and foundation built by His predecessor, explaining that upon the floating of 2024/2025 WAEC, the Ministry approached the Governor for payment of the Fees and the proposal was graciously approved.

“The governor has released the sum of N661 million for payment of WAEC for public schools. We are in the process of profiling the students. Only students captured for the payment will be the beneficiaries.”

Mr. Jones warned against principals, putting in names of non beneficiaries into the list, “We warn against ‘strange names” creeping into the register. This will endanger the scheme and rob those who are supposed to benefit from benefiting.”

The commissioner also said the state government has approved N522 million for the payment of Common Entrance and JSS3 examination for students in public schools,

“The state governor has approved for the payment of Common Entrance and First School Leaving Certificate of 25,100 students in primary school the sum of N145,476,984.

“Additionally, for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) the sum of N215,220,000 for 30,000 students; while the state also approved N181,719, 800 for JAMB form for 18,334 students in public schools.

“No students or pupils should pay any amounts for any of those examinations as everything has been covered, including administrative charges and passport photographs of the beneficiaries.

“So far, the state has approved the sum of N522,416,784 for Common Entrance, BECE, and JAMB. When added to the WAEC fund released, it amounts to N1,203,726,984 that the state has earmarked for examinations for students and pubils in public school.”

He said the reasons for such huge investment in education are to increase school enrolment, decrease dropouts, and guarantee high school completion.

“The intention of the State Government about the policy was to make life a bit easier for parents in the area of payment of WAEC and to address the issue of Out of School Children.”
