    Despite protests from the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) and its governors, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last night declared Senator Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), governor-elect of Edo State.

    In the election held across 4,519 polling units across 192 wards, APC polled 291,667 while the PDP garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) came third with 22,763 votes.

    Okpebholo led in 11 out of the 18 local government areas to defeat Asue Ighodalo who won in seven.

    INEC announced that Okpebholo secured victories in key local government areas, including Esan West, Owan West, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Etsako West and Oredo.

    In a short message he released after INEC’s declaration at 9:28pm, titled ‘Thank you’, Senator Okpebholo, fondly called Akpakomiza said: Dear Edo State electorate,

    “Thank you, my people of Edo State! Your trust and support have brought us this victory. Together, we will build a brighter future for our state, ensuring progress, unity, and prosperity for all.

    “This is just the beginning—let’s continue to move forward, hand in hand. I am honored and humbled by your confidence in me, and I pledge to work tirelessly to fulfill the mandate you have given me as the new Governor of Edo State.

    “Under my leadership, we will tackle the pressing issues facing our state and deliver real, positive change that improves the lives of all Edo people. With your continued engagement and partnership, I know that Edo State has a future filled with endless possibilities.

    “God bless Edo State, and may God bless you all.”
