Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has banned the collection of revenue in cash by all agents licensed by the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS).
This decision builds on the foundation laid by the previous administration of Mr Godwin Obaseki, which introduced electronic revenue collection across the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Umar Ikhilor, announced the directive in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that it aims to protect citizens from extortion and prevent revenue leakages.
Ikhilor emphasised that only EIRS-licensed agents are authorised to collect revenue, following a system developed collaboratively by the EIRS, local government councils, and various state associations.

“The Edo State Government reiterates its ban on unlicensed agents and touts involved in revenue collection across the state. This measure, recognising only EIRS-licensed agents, seeks to safeguard citizens and protect the integrity of the revenue collection process,” the statement read.
“For clarity, the revenue collection system will adhere strictly to the established template developed by the EIRS in partnership with local governments and associations. The government has firmly prohibited direct cash collection in revenue-related activities. Security agents have been placed on high alert, and violators of this directive will face the full weight of the law,” Ikhilor warned.
He reiterated the ban on unlicensed agents and touts, cautioning that security operatives are on standby to arrest and prosecute any individual or group found violating the directive.
Governor Okpebholo’s stance reinforces Edo State’s commitment to efficient and transparent revenue collection processes.
