Ex-editor of The Guardian Newspaper and Chairman, Delta State Government IDPs resettlement Committee for the Management of Ewu Camp, Abraham Ogbodo, at the weekend, said that the committee is committed to ensuring that the facility is fully functional and starts receiving people by the middle of next week.
Ogbodo disclosed this to newsmen, following concerns that the camp had not been opened to IDPs days after the inauguration of the committee.
The IDPs’ resettlement committee chairman noted that the delay was a result of the enormous work needed to make the site ready to receive expected IDPs.
Ogbodo said: “The place was as if it never existed before. We are faced with dilapidated buildings, no roof, and no windows; nothing was functional. So, repairing it for people to come in was bound to take some time.
“If they had asked for my opinion, they would have silently prepared and got the camp ready before the committee would have been inaugurated. So, at that point, once the committee is inaugurated, it would have been to come and start receiving the people immediately.
“With what is on the ground, if we can turn the place around and open the camp by the middle of next week, it should be to our (committee’s) credit. As I am talking to you now, I’m monitoring the situation, going there every day.”
