A Yoruba socio-cultural group, Egbe Omo Ilaje, has raised concerns over escalating attacks on Ilaje villages and towns along the Ondo-Ogun border by suspected hoodlums allegedly fuelled by border disputes.

Speaking at a world press conference in Lagos on Friday, the group’s President-General, Iwamitigha Irowainu, called on the government at both state and local levels to intervene before the situation escalates into full-blown conflict.

He recounted historical tensions between the Ilaje people and the Ijebu over land claims.

He said, “We have several communities at the borderline, with only one, Ijebukunmi, currently in Ogun Waterside. Other towns and villages, such as Urogun and Atijere, are situated along the Ogun and Ondo border,” Irowainu explained.

“Since the colonial era, the Ijebus have made several attempts to occupy some of our lands along the borderline, which we have vehemently opposed.

“It has led to confrontations in the past. Recently, one of the leaders from Ogun State led some miscreants into the Ondo side of the border, attacking villagers and burning parts of the community.”

Irowainu urged the government to take swift action, warning that the Ilaje people would be forced to defend themselves if the authorities failed to ensure their safety.

“We are peace-loving people but will not stand by while our communities are under attack. If the government cannot protect us, we will be left with no choice but to do it ourselves, which could lead to serious confrontation,” he further stated.
