A speeding driver, on Monday, crushed a pedestrian to death at the Lotto bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
PUNCH Online gathered that the pedestrian was walking by the roadside before the vehicle which was speeding, lost control and rammed into the yet-to-be-identified female
pedestrian and her two children.
An eyewitness who simply identified as Chanka told our correspondent who was at the scene of the accident that the woman a regular beggar in the area, died from the impact of the collision.
He said, “We were seated here when we had the sound of a brake screech which we thought was a brake failure from a vehicle. The loud sound threw people into a panic mood as people were scampering for safety.
“It was after some moment that we realised that the vehicle had collided with a woman and her children, killing the woman on the spot and injuring the children.
“The woman is a regular beggar in this area. Her children have been taken to hospital.”
Another eye witness, Sandra Udoisang, noted that the scene of the crash and the impact of the crash were gory people were scared to move to the scene.
She, however, stressed that she could not describe the real cause of the accident.
Udoisang added, “The vehicle ran over the woman but the sight is too gory to watch. Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on brake failure. But I know nothing about vehicles, so I don’t know if it’s as a result of brake failure or speeding.”
Confirming the accident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Monday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, blamed the crash on speeding.
She stated that further investigation is ongoing.
“The incident happened due to speeding because if it wasn’t speeding, there is no way he wouldn’t be able to control the vehicle.
“The officers conducted a rescue mission and further investigation will be conducted,” Okpe explained.
PUNCH Online earlier reported on Monday that no fewer than three people were burnt to death when their vehicle collided with a truck in the Iyana-Isolo area of Lagos State on Sunday night.
