LAGOS – Yunusa Tanko, the spokesperson for Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has dismissed any discussions regarding a merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Remember when the Deputy National spokesman for the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, made it known during a live political show that the three prominent opposition figures in Nigeria were exploring the option of merging to address hunger and insecurity before the 2027 presidential race.

Paul Ibe stated that Atiku has consistently emphasized the need for a merger, thereby confirming Abdullahi’s remarks.

He mentioned, “Atiku has consistently advocated for an opposition alliance. His stance is now more critical than ever, given that Nigeria, presently under Tinubu’s leadership, is in a precarious state. We have experienced repeated failures of trial and error policies. Hunger pervades, even among his followers.”

Contrary to this, Yunusa dismissed these assertions, affirming that his principal, Peter Obi, is prioritizing the consolidation of his political support base.

In his conversation with the mentioned publication, Yunusa highlighted that discussions regarding a merger are resurfacing due to the initiation of political calculations and the heightened significance of the 2027 presidential election.

They expressed their gratitude for the gesture but highlighted that Peter Obi had gleaned valuable lessons from the previous election and is inclined towards strengthening his nationwide network.

In his words, “I’ve heard about the merger talks. However, our current focus is primarily on expanding our nationwide presence.

You can count on that. Our main objective now is to have a strong presence across the country.

We observed in the last election that our reliance on certain individuals led to disappointments. Now, we aim to have our supporters on the ground. You might already know about the Obidient Movement; it spans across different political affiliations, making us more extensive and formidable. Our members are in various parties like PDP, APC, and beyond.”

“If you’re all about good governance, then you’re an Obidient individual because our movement is solely focused on combating bad governance. That’s our sole agenda.”
