The Kano State Police Command has arraigned a popular Kannywood actress, Amal Umar, before a Kano-based Magistrates’ Court No 24, Gyadi-Gyadi, over an alleged attempt to bribe a police officer.

“The motive of the alleged attempt to bribe a police officer was to halt police investigation into alleged financial misappropriation perpetrated by the actress’s boyfriend, identified as Ramadan Inuwa,” according to the prosecutor.

The prosecutor stated that the offence violates Section 118 of the Penal Code, prohibiting the bribery of a police officer.

However, the attempt was prevented by the police, who arrested the actress, with documentary evidence of the alleged bribery scandal, a development that informed her subsequent arraignment before the Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

A complaint was filed by one Alhaji Yusuf Adamu through his lawyer, H.I. Dederi, to the Assistant Inspector General, Umar Mohd Sanda, on August 18, 2022, with a rundown of how Ramadan Inuwa allegedly misappropriated a substantial amount of money, totalling N40m, in his cell phone business.

At the close of the day, the petition led to a subsequent police investigation, revealing that N13m was transferred to Umar’s bank account by Inuwa.

The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 1, Kano, CSP Bashir Muhammed, disclosed that the actress was consequently summoned for questioning and thereafter granted bail, but was not allowed to depart the premises, in a car allegedly purchased by her boyfriend.

The actress confessed that the money in her bank account belonged to her boyfriend but in contradiction claimed that he only transferred N8m.

Following her bail, Umar sought legal redress by approaching the High Court of Kano State to halt further police investigations.

The court temporarily restrained the police from further investigating the actress, a development that allegedly provided an opportunity for Umar to attempt to bribe the police investigator, ASP Salisu Bujama.
