In a recent briefing in Abuja, the Nigerian Police Force announced that it had arrested 10,852 suspects nationwide over the past three months.

These arrests, made between July and September, were linked to various crimes, including kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery.

Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, shared the details during a meeting with senior police officers, highlighting the achievements of the force. “We have successfully apprehended 10,852 individuals involved in serious crimes. In the same period, we recovered 416 firearms, 3,672 rounds of ammunition, and 178 stolen vehicles. Additionally, 369 kidnapped victims were safely rescued,” Egbetokun said.

He also noted a significant reduction in crime rates, particularly in banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cybercrime.

Speaking on the upcoming November 16 gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Egbetokun reassured the public of the police’s readiness to ensure a peaceful and secure election process. He urged officers to build on the successes from the Edo election, emphasizing professionalism and vigilance. “Our goal is to provide a secure environment where voters can freely participate without fear or intimidation,” he stated.

Egbetokun also highlighted the importance of collaboration with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders to ensure safety during the election.

As the “ember months” approach, a period often associated with increased criminal activities, the IGP outlined plans for heightened security measures. “We will increase patrols and implement intelligence-driven and community-oriented policing to ensure the safety of lives and property throughout this season,” he added.
