Police detectives attached to the anti-kidnapping unit of Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested an internet fraudster who duped a female U.S.-based Nigerian car dealer of N30 million in the guise of buying a Mercedes GL 350 car.
Also, police operatives arrested a trans-border gunrunner who illegally procures arms and ammunition from Benin Republic for his fellow cultists in the country.
Sources said the suspected fraudster, identified as Joshua Olaosebikan Olawuyi, approached his victim, one Remee Adesuwa Ogizie, sometime in 2016, saying he wanted to buy a Mercedes GL350 car valued at the stated sum.
The vehicle was shipped to him in Nigeria after an agreement had been reached and payment made. But the woman later discovered that the payment was fraudulent.
She petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Olatoye Durosinmi, following which the suspect was nabbed, and confessed to the crime.
Also, the activities of the gunrunner, identified as Shokoti Roborth, in Atan, Ogun State, had been under watch by detectives, following complaints by residents.
When he was arrested, detectives recovered locally fabricated pistols belonging to him and his cohorts. He also confessed that he belonged to the Aiye cult.
He also told detectives that he got the guns from the Republic of Benin.
Confirming the arrests, spokesperson for the zone, SP Ayuba Umma, said investigations into the activities of the two were ongoing, and they would soon have their days in court.
