The Rivers State Police Command says it has identified and arrested a personnel of the Force suspected to have killed one Mr Peterside Ebikere in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Daily Sun learned that the man was reportedly shot dead at close range in the presence of his wife and three children.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), stated this yesterday, disclosing that the suspect is a Mobile police officer attached to 43 PMF Gombe State on a special operation in Rivers State.
According to Iringe-Koko, the Rivers Police Command received a complaint on Monday, August 7, 2023, about the incident which occurred last Thursday, at Polis Road, Elelenwo, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
She said that from the complaint the command received from Peterside Ebikere (a female), the deceased died after some policemen had shot sporadically during a pandemonium at the scene of the incident.
The PPRO stated: “On Monday, August 7, 2023, at about 1330 hrs, Rivers State Police Command received a complaint from one Peterside Ebikere “F,” of Polis Road, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt, that on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at about 2200 hrs, while at a Bar/Lounge in company of her husband and three children, all of a sudden, pandemonium broke out, and in the midst of the confusion, mobile policemen from 43 PMF Gombe on special duty in Rivers State on guard fired several shots that hit her husband.
“He was rushed to Save-a-Life Hospital, where he was certified dead by the doctor on duty.”
Iringe-Koko confirmed that some policemen had been arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), in connection with the incident.
She added further investigation was ongoing and the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
Meanwhile, the corpse had been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port Harcourt.
