The Sokoto State Police Command has assured residents of the state of its commitment to remain focused and professional in the discharge of its duties.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Kaigama, stated this in his goodwill message at the state Congress of Nigerian Union of Journalist on Saturday.
The CP who expressed his satisfaction to the good working relationship between the council and the state command, further assured residents of the state of protection of their individual human rights without fear or favour.
Delivering his presentation titled, “Mass media and national security in Nigeria: Balancing professional ethics with national interests”, Abubakar Mohammed Sokoto of the Sociology Department, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, urged journalists to put the interest of the country first in their reportage.
He called for more verification of news item before going to press to reduce spreading of fake news in the society.
In his remarks, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Sambo Bello Danchadi, assured journalists in the state of government’s support to enable them discharge their responsibilities to the citizens.
He however appealed to journalists not only in the state but across the country, to focus more on developmental journalism.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the state chairman of the council, Dalhatu Abdullahi Maigori, said the Congress is to review issues concerning the operations of journalists in the state.
