Benue State Police have uncovered an internet fraud academy in Makurdi, the state capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Yabanet, disclosed this on Tuesday when he paraded 35 suspects arrested for various offences.
Yabanet revealed that detectives were dispatched to investigate the fraud academy located on Jerome Hwande Street, Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi.
He stated, “The fraud academy and operations of Internet fraudsters take place in Makurdi at Jerome Hwande Street, Akpa-Quarters, Makurdi.
“Police detectives were detailed to investigate the case. On 14/5/2024 at about 0600hrs, the following suspects were arrested at the house; one Terpase Luke Denmodi ‘m’ 23 years and Avalumun Ayangekaa Dominic ‘m’ 24 years.”
Yabanet explained that the suspects used multiple social media accounts on their phones to defraud people.
He also paraded other suspects involved in kidnapping, cultism, and armed robbery.
The police commissioner warned landlords and hoteliers to be cautious of the individuals they accommodate, noting that they could become victims themselves and face prosecution for criminal conspiracy.
