The family, colleagues, and associates of Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, have described his death as a significant loss to Nigeria and humanity.

Yaqub, who also served as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, passed away on Saturday in Abuja after a brief illness at the age of 73.

He was laid to rest at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, with many attending to pay their final respects.

Until his passing, Yaqub served as Chairman of the Academic Advisory Board of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS). His contributions to academia and governance earned him widespread respect.

Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of NILDS, called Yaqub’s death a personal loss. “He was a consummate administrator, a core academic, and a role model to so many of us. His contributions to our institute and the nation are irreplaceable,” Sulaiman said.

Former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, also mourned Yaqub, recalling his mentorship and leadership. “He was a committed educator and public servant whose impact will be greatly missed,” Jega remarked.

Yashim Yaqub, the late scholar’s son, expressed deep sorrow over the family’s loss, highlighting his father’s humility, kindness, and selflessness. “He was my daughter’s best friend; I do not know how they will take it,” he said tearfully.
