The Federal Government is to pay N100 million to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, for violating his right to personal liberty.
This was the judgement of Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court Abuja in a human rights suit brought by Emefiele against the Federal Government.
Justice Adeniyi held that the prolonged detention of the ex-CBN chief without trial, was a flagrant violation of his fundamental rights.
He restrained the Federal Government and its agents from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without an order of court.
Emefiele was contesting his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services. He was arrested on June 10, 2023 shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
