Promote learning in boychild, Sanwo-Olu tells stakeholders
The wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has advised stakeholders in the education sector to promote learning opportunities for the boychild.
Speaking at the 60th-anniversary Thanksgiving reception of Eva Adelaja Girls’ Secondary Grammar School, Bariga, Sanwo-Olu maintained that there should be equity in education.
The old girls of the school held a week-long event to celebrate their alma mater at 60.
Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the wife of Permanent Secretary, of Health District 4, Dr Modupe Bowale, said “We should promote educational opportunities in male children and they should also be given the orientation on how to achieve their potential. No child should be left alone.”
She also advised that the girlchild should not be subjected to harrowing experiences, adding that a culture of silence should not be encouraged.
“Girlchild should be encouraged to fulfill her potential while we pay attention to her excellence, knowledge, skills, and opportunities. We must all speak up for the girlchild and seek justice for affected persons.”
Also speaking, Global President, EAGSGSOGA, Mrs Rhoda Ayinde, explained that the milestone (60th anniversary), was a testament to the enduring legacy of excellence and achievement the school had upheld.
“We are proud to see the school consistently producing notable individuals who have significantly contributed to the global society. The outstanding academic accomplishments of the students over the years further exemplify their dedication and commitment to learning,” she said.
Chairman organising committee, Mrs Folashade Laja, described her time in the school as the best, adding that the school brought out the best in her as she was always the best student in her class.
“I think education at that time was more solid, students and teachers worked towards excellence building up persons that can stand on their own. At that time we did not have a lot of exam malpractices and all of that, it wasn’t common and once you’re caught you’re dealt with. But these days, even parents encourage their children not to be serious with their studies because by the time you begin to buy favors for your child then that child cannot be serious.
“I want to say that we had more committed teachers, we had students who had the fear of God, fear of their teachers, and fear of failure, because failure at that time was not acceptable to any parent,” Laja said.
One of the children of the late Eva Adelaja, founder, of Sweet Sensation, Dame Kehinde Kamson was also at the event.
Earlier, a Thanksgiving service was held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja.
The school was founded by late Mrs Evangeline Adelaja, a woman of vision for sound education for the ‘Girl child.’
She was the wife of late Archdeacon Benaiah Adelaja, a former principlal of Lagos Anglican Boys Grammar School, Bariga, later called C.M.S Grammar School, Bariga.
The school began on January 27, 1964. However, the proprietress (Adelaja), desired that February 25th which was her birthday be adopted as Founders day.
