The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has urged the Federal Government to reconsider the recent increase in petrol prices, which has significantly driven up the cost of food and other essential commodities.

The forum disclosed this in a statement, emphasizing the need to address the impact of the price hike, noting that the recent protests by Nigerians were largely a response to the rising petrol costs, which have exacerbated the hardships faced by the populace.

It also advocated for a decrease in electricity tariffs, arguing that lower costs would enable Nigerians to produce goods and services more affordably.

Recall in August, Nigerians staged protests around the nation in several cities protesting the ongoing economic hardships they face under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration, demonstrating their apparent rage.

The protesters infuriated flocked to major streets in important states of the federation to voice their disapproval, regardless of desperate attempts, threats, and a string of court orders from the Nigerian Police, the military, and the Federal Government to force them into restricted demonstrations.

They carried placards that had different inscriptions, like #EndBadGovernance and #TinubuMustGo.

“We acknowledge that the recent protests by some Nigerians were a response to the rise in petrol prices, exacerbating the hardships faced by the populace. We recommend a downward review of petrol prices to alleviate the suffering of the people,” noted NCEF, Chairman, DR S.D. Gani, CON.

Furthermore, he noted “We advocate for a reduction in electricity tariffs to enable Nigerians to produce goods and services more economically. This measure will enhance productivity and create employment opportunities for our burgeoning youth population.”

He further called for enhanced security measures, particularly for farmers in rural areas who play a vital role in the nation’s food security.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts in improving security, the forum urged for more immediate and effective actions to protect these essential workers.

“We call for improved security, particularly for farmers in rural areas who are crucial to the nation’s food security. While we recognize the Government’s efforts in this regard, we urge for more immediate and effective actions,” he stated.

While believing that the straightforward recommendations will significantly alleviate the current hardships experienced by many Nigerians, he added that the forum is trusting in the Government’s wisdom and political will to implement these measures.
