The House of Representatives has condoled with the government and people of Yobe State over the death of a former governor of the state, Bukar Ibrahim.

Ibrahim died at 73 on Sunday in Saudi Arabia after a protracted illness.

In a statement issued on Sunday by House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the lawmakers noted that the death of the former governor is a painful loss to the entire country.

The statement read, “The demise of Senator Ibrahim a quantity surveyor and foremost Yobe politician who went from being a three-time Governor to a three-time Senator, is a painful loss to the entire country.

“Until his passing this Sunday in Saudi Arabia, after a protracted illness, he was also husband to Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and incumbent lawmaker representing Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu, and Tarmuwa Federal Constituency of Yobe State.

“As governor, his contributions to the socio-economic development of his home State; especially in the areas of education and housing will be remembered for many generations. His gesture of appointing advisers and assistants not indigenous to his state are also legacies that will continue to live in the hearts of the people.

“Additionally, his time as Senator representing Yobe East in the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Assemblies which culminated in his Chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change was also eventful, as he brought his wealth of experience and wisdom to bear in various sessions of parliament.”

Also, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, in his condolence message, expressed shock at the news, describing it as a huge and irreparable loss.

“The death of Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim is shocking and painful. He excelled as the governor of Yobe State and as a member of the Senate. He was an experienced politician – one of the few who have been lucky to serve the country in both the Executive and the Legislature, at the state and federal levels,” his condolence message read in part.

The House further expressed its sympathies to the chairperson of the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, Khadija Ibrahim, and the family.
