Taraba State has again been enveloped in mourning following a tragic motor accident that claimed the lives of six members of the state chapter of the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN).
The accident occurred on Sunday as the group was returning from Gembu, the administrative headquarters of the Sardauna local government area, to Jalingo, the state capital.
The deceased, travelling in an 18-seater bus, as gathered by The Guardian, went to a church in Gembu.
Eyewitnesses who spoke with our correspondent said they were on their way back from the conference that ended on Saturday when the unexpected happened.
The Christian community whom our correspondent noticed to have been in a sad mood, viewed the incident as a black Sunday not only to the state but to the Christian community at large.
Also mourning the deceased, the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, describing the news as heartbreaking and devastating.
The governor who lamented the tragic circumstances of their deaths, said the women, noting were returning from the WOWICAN Conference when death came calling.
Kefas’ who also described the incident as a “black Sunday” pledged his administration’s commitment to improving road safety, particularly in areas known to pose threats to life.
His administration, according to him, has directed local government chairmen to ensure the maintenance of existing roads with proper traffic controls, signage, and necessary repairs.
He emphasized his administration’s dedication to minimizing the frequency of such road mishaps, which, according to him, are often caused by poor road conditions.
